Allen Travers has the distinction of being the only Catholic priest to have previously been a Major League Baseball player. His one appearance as a pitcher came on May 18, 1912, when he was signed to play as a replacement player when the contracted roster of the Detroit Tigers refused to play as part of a protest against the suspension of Ty Cobb. He became a Catholic priest later in life.
