After serving as First Consul in France, Napoleon declared France an empire with himself as emperor. After many battles throughout Europe, this First French Empire, extended into Spain, Italy, Austria, and attempted to push further east, but was beaten back by the Russians. The First French Empire came to an end when Napoleon abdicated on April 6, 1814, however he returned to power for a brief period in 1815, only to be beaten at Waterloo by the British later that year and forced to abdicate again.
