Construction began on the city of Nay Pyi Taw (also spelled Naypyidaw or Naypyitaw) in 2004 and by 2006 it was declared the capital of Myanmar (also known as Burma). The capital of Myanmar used to be Yangon but the cited reason for the relocation of the capital was so that the government and the capital could be more accessible from all parts of the country. Nay Pyi Taw in Burmese means "Abode of Kings".
