Santiago is the capital of Chile, but was originally founded as Santiago del Nuevo Extremo or “Santiago of the New Frontier,” in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. Though Chile declared independence in 1810, it was the start of a long eight-year war before they could officially gain independence and name Santiago their capital in 1818.
