Lima is the capital city of Peru. The city was founded by the Spanish conquistador Pizarro on Jan. 18, 1535, and was originally named Ciudad de los Reyes (“City of the Kings”), though this name never stuck. Lima was chosen as the regional capital over the Incan capital of Cuzco due to its coastal location.
