What is the conventional amount of space you should put between floor joists?

Floor joists are spaced out to provide a sturdy floor with an economical use of materials. Joists are standardly spaced 16 inches apart to achieve these measures. However in some cases you can space them farther apart or closer together, though the type of joist you use, and the later characteristics of the finished floor may change.
