What is Gilbert's last name for most of Leave it to Beaver?

In the first episode in which Gilbert appears, "Beaver and Gilbert", Gilbert's last name is Gates. For most of the rest of the series, he is called Gilbert Bates, except for one episode in season 5, where the continuity breaks and he is known as Gilbert Harrison.
