When it comes to mascots, University of California-Santa Cruz declared "when they go high we go low". What is the name of the ground-dwelling symbol of UCSC?
Answer Sammy the Slug
The Banana Slug is a bright yellow, slimy, mollusk that is commonly found on the redwood forest floor near Santa Cruz. In 1980, when UC Santa Cruz joined Division III athletics, they chose the Sea Lions as their mascot. But the unofficial mascot - Sammy the Slug - had too much emotional pull to the students, and eventually superseded the Sea Lions name.
