The Cañari people of central Ecuoador resisted conquest by the dominant Incan Empire for decades, even allying themselves with the Spanish to protect themselves. While their efforts wer laudable, the Inca did conquer them in the early 16th century. Today, the number of Cañari still living number in the thousands.
