Colonies were founded by members of The Children of God (COG), a movement led by David Brandt Berg. Claiming to be a prophet, Berg wrote his followers over 3,000 letters that are known as the "Mo Letters". After serious misconduct and child sex abuse accusations, there was a mass exodus of members, but the remaining members took on another name: Family of Love.
