Gandalf the Grey doesn't make it over the bridge. When faced with the Balrog in the mines, Gandalf holds the monster at bay to allow the others to go free. Gandalf then tries to send the Balrog into the deep dark chasm...but unfortunately, the great wizard goes with him.
