Composed sometime between 1680 and 1706, Pachelbel's Canon was popular in its time but soon fell into total obscurity, where it stayed for centuries. A 1968 recording by the Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra changed all that. In 1970, a San Francisco radio station was flooded with calls after playing the piece. By the time Ordinary People was released ten years later, Pachelbel's Canon was already a familiar favorite of movie audiences.
