What famous crooner was originally supposed to play Billy in Carousel, the film?

Frank Sinatra was initially meant to star in the film version of Carousel, but he walked out prior to filming. According to Gordon MacRae, each scene was to be recorded twice for regular CinemaScope and for CinemaScope 55, which is why Sinatra checked out (although rumor has it that Sinatra's then-wife, Ava Gardner, threatened to have an affair with Clark Gable if he didn't fly to Africa to meet her immediately). Either way, MacRae jumped at the opportunity and producers found a way to convert the film to both scopes without shooting twice.
