Originally called Buckingham House, the structure of today's palace was a magnificent townhouse constructed in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham on a land that had been privately owned for at least 150 years. It was purchased by King George III in 1761 for Queen Charlotte as a private home and it became known as "Queen's House."
