As they're settling down for the night, Gollum is inspired. He pins Sam as a traitor by placing bread crumbs on Sam's clothing and throwing their last remaining food over the chasm. Then he wakes Frodo up and convinces him that Sam not only ate the food but wants the Ring for himself.
