What do the bands of color on the Austrian flag represent?

Answer Survival after a fierce battle

The most romantic explanation dates from the 12th century, when Duke Leopold V of Austria removed his belt after a fierce battle during the Crusades. His outer garment was stained red with blood, but was pure white beneath the belt. He was so struck by the sight that he took the color bands red-white-red as his personal banner. Others would have it that the colors are associated with the Holy Roman Empire's war flag.
