What did Martin Luther King, Jr. do?

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible and recognizable face and voice of the American civil rights movement. He worked tirelessly for equality from 1955 until he was murdered in 1968 by James Earl Ray, who then fled the country. The fugitive was eventually captured and put on trial, pleading guilty rather than facing a jury trial. He died in prison.
