What Chilean independence leader is credited with liberating Chile from Spanish rule in 1818?

Bernardo O'Higgins was born in the Chilean city of Chillán in 1778 and, in adulthood, rose to become the Supreme Director of Chile and led the Chilean army in the Chilean War of Independence. The state declared its independence in 1818 and Spain recognized it 26 years later after the reestablishment of diplomatic relations.
