What birds were traditionally used to predict the presence of dangerous gases inside of coal mines?

In the days before equipment such as carbon monoxide detectors coal miners would often bring canaries into the mines as a basic early warning system. If there was a presence of dangerous gas, it would kill the canary before it got to levels dangerous enough to harm the miners.
