When Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés rolled into Tenochtitlán, he was met with a warm welcome by Aztec emperor Montezuma II as he and his army were at first believed to be divine messengers of the god Quetzalcoatl. Cortés took Montezuma prisoner, but after Aztec chiefs were executed, the Aztecs rebelled. Montezuma was killed in the fighting.
