Jonas Salk produced the first effective polio vaccine. In 1948, he began an experiment to establish the number of distinct strains of poliovirus at the University of Pittsburg's School of Medicine. He dedicated the next seven years of his life to creating a vaccine against polio. In fact, when the vaccine's effectiveness was made public in 1954, he opted not to patent the vaccine in order to increase its worldwide dissemination.
