What "affair" occurred when French diplomats were demanding bribes from U.S. delegates during the French Revolution?
Answer X, Y, Z Affair
The French began searching U.S. ships en route to England around the time of the French Revolution. An American delegation was sent to Paris by President John Adams in order to hash things out, but there, three French diplomats demanded a bribe or no negotiation. The meeting notes of this session were made public by the President, redacting the names of the French reps, and replacing them with X, Y, and Z. Thus, the scandal became known as the X, Y, Z Affair, and a quasi-war unfolded as a result.
