Way back at the start, the U.S. consisted of only 13 states. Which of these was NOT one of them?
Answer Vermont
Vermont was first settled by French colonists in the early 1600s. Following their loss in the French and Indian War, France ceded all land east of the Mississippi River to the British pursuant to the 1763 Treaty of Paris. In 1777, Vermont declared its independence from the Crown and drafted a constitution — the first in North America to ban slavery. Vermont became the 14th state admitted to the union in 1791.
