Ivan Vanko's father Anton Vanko had worked with Howard Stark to develop a prototype of the arc reactor. After Howard had Anton deported on charges of espionage, Anton died penniless and Ivan sought revenge on Howard's son Tony. Ivan then built a similar miniaturized version of the arc reactor, and after using Justin Hammer for his resources, built a powered suit of his own but was defeated by Iron Man and War Machine.
