The desert tortoise is a species native to the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico and the Sinaloan thornscrub of northwestern Mexico. It's currently listed as "threatened" by the United States federal Endangered Species Act and is considered “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
