The Americans were preparing a functional A-bomb by December of 1942 in what became known as the Manhattan Project. Military officials and scientists performed nuclear research largely in Los Alamos, New Mexico. About 2.5 years later, in July of 1945, their mission was accomplished during the Trinity Test, as the first atomic bomb was detonated in the desert near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
