The frankfurter sausage originated in Germany, and was brought to the United States by German immigrants in New York who sold hot dogs from pushcarts in the 1860s. However, hot dogs did not gain real popularity until Jewish immigrant Nathan Handwerker from Poland sold them at his successful Coney Island stand in 1915. This is when Nathan's Famous was born.
