James Dean had youth and good looks on his side. His first role was a television commercial for Pepsi Cola. He had some bit parts and television shows in his early career before being discovered in a theatrical production called The Immoralist. Dean's first film, East of Eden, was a box-office hit, and he was instantly in demand. He was nominated for the first posthumous Best Actor Academy Award in history for his role in this film. His other films were still in post-production at the time of his untimely death, so he was never able to see them released.
