Malekith was the leader of the ancient race known as the Dark Elves and fought a war with the Asgardians many years ago using the Aether. When Odin's father Bor eventually beat Malekith, he went into hiding with the remaining Dark Elves, only to return during the Convergence when the nine realms were in alignment. Malekith was eventually defeated by Thor and his friends in Greenwich when his own ship crashed on top of him.
