In 1975, Daniel “Chappie” James, Jr. was the first African-American individual to achieve the four-star General rank. Though he did not fly any missions in World War II, James attended the Tuskegee Institute and instructed pilots during the war. He served in the Air Force from 1943 to 1978 and flew combat missions in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
