Hip hop artist Tupac Shakur (1971-1996), considered one of the greatest rappers in history, is also one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. A pillar of the West Coast hip hop scene, he introduced more social consciousness into the genre at a time when gangsta rap ruled. In 1996, Shakur - then just 25 years old - was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas and died six days later. The gunman was never found, though rumors still abound that the incident was related to the East Coast/West Coast hip hop rivalry.
