The daughter of a Dutch noblewoman and a German oil executive, Edda Kathleen Hepburn-Ruston took the stage name of Audrey Hepburn when she entered the world of stage and screen following her parents' divorce. She was very thin for her 5' 6" frame - a result of starvation during World War II. A former dancer, she used her skills in few films. She portrayed everything from a reformed prostitute to a nun and played equally well in either comedic or serious roles. She became a major contributor to the Red Cross and UNICEF efforts, traveling to South America, Turkey, Ethiopia, Honduras, El Salvador, Sudan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and many other countries, where she helped with humanitarian efforts.
