New Mexico's motto came into common usage in the mid-1930s, after the state had thrown in the towel in its competition with Florida for their previously adopted motto: the "Sunshine State". A handful of other contenders never really caught on: the “Land of Opportunity,” the “Land of the Heart’s Desire,” the “Cactus State,” and the “Spanish State".
