This self-portrait entitled The Desperate Man is by Romantic-turned-Realist Gustave Courbet, who was once called "the Mick Jagger of the _____ century."

Painted in 1843, Courbet's intensely anguished self-portrait reflects an artist at a turning point, unable to fully commit to the Romantic tradition of his training but not yet fully aware of his artistic destiny. He kept this portrait in his studio until his death.
