Chairman Mao Zedong, in an attempt to secure his place in history, used his last decade as a leader to keep his ideological leadership in place and to squash elitism, resulting in attacks on intellectuals and the elderly by the Red Guards. An estimated 500,000 to 2,000,000 people died during the Cultural Revolution.
