Alice Toklas, Gertrude Stein's partner, was by her side through her fight against stomach cancer, to which she succumbed in 1946. Toklas said that before her surgery, Stein said, “What is the answer?” and when no one responded, added, “In that case, what is the question?” She then fell into a coma, dying without knowing the answer or the question.
