The Keeshond breed has a fascinating history — it was named after Cornelis "Kees" de Gijselaar, a Dutch revolutionary who led the rebellion against the House of Orange in the late 18th century. As such, the name Keeshond quite literally means "Kees' dog." After becoming the symbol of the rebellion, Keeshonds became associated with sailing because they commonly served as a guard dog on barges and boats that navigated the canals of Amsterdam.
