When this 563-foot monumental project of Crazy Horse is complete (if that should ever happen), the colossal sculpture will be the largest in the world. Carved into a mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the 19th century Lakota war leader saw the American settlers as encroaching on the traditions, the way of life, and the land of the Native American people. And so, he took arms against them. Work began on Crazy Horse in 1948, and still only his face is etched in the stone with no end in sight.
