In Greek mythology, Iris was the embodiment of the rainbow. According to Hesiod, she was the daughter of Thaumas and Electra, and was often depicted with wings. Her characteristics were the herald's staff and a vase. She was also often shown hanging out with the gods and pouring wine for them.
