This European revolutionary once served in the British army and was later executed by them. Name that Irish founding father.
Answer James Connolly
Called a founding father of Ireland, James Connolly served in the British Army before deserting. He is quoted as saying of his opposition to WWI: "I know of no foreign enemy of this country except the British Government." He later founded the Irish Socialist Republican Party and the Irish Citizen Army, which defended workers and strikers. This all culminated in the Easter Rising, in which Connolly served as the commander-in-chief of the Dublin Brigade. He was executed by the British in 1916 for his role.
