This dessert, popular at Christmas time, is made using layers of custard, fruit and sherry-soaked sponge cake.

The trifle dates back to at least 1585 when it was referenced in a book by Thomas Dawson. Although it is traditionally made with sherry-soaked sponge cake, fruit and custard, there are many different recipes and variations, including forgoing fruit and using chocolate or coffee.
