Neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) rose from homeless graffiti artist to art collector darling in just a handful of years. His highly charged work included bitter social commentary and reflected his acute internal turmoil - as did his lifestyle. Basquiat died of a drug overdose at age 27 in 1988. Not long before his death, the artist claimed he was doing up to one hundred bags of heroin per day.
