This 1978 play caused a rule change in the NFL. What is the name of the play where Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler purposely fumbled the ball, and it proceeded to be swatted and kicked until it was in the end zone and fell upon for a touchdown?
Answer The Holy Roller
In 1978, the Oakland Raiders were trailing in a week 2 game against the San Diego Chargers, but were on the 14-yard-line of the Chargers. After Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler was hit by Chargers defensive end Fred Dean, Stabler decided to fumble the ball on purpose, which led to a game-winning touchdown after the ball was batted, kicked into the end zone, and finally landed on by tight end Dave Casper. The play was legal at the time, but due to this play, the NFL changed the fumble rules within two minutes.
