This 1941 self-portrait is by Samuel Joseph Brown, Jr. (1907-1994), the first African American hired by the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP). Which U.S. President's "New Deal" vision created this depression-era work relief program for the arts?

Answer Franklin Roosevelt

Samuel Brown also worked as a painter and printmaker in the PWAP's successor program, the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. An acclaimed watercolorist, Brown was once visited by Eleanor Roosevelt and had works purchased for the White House as well as multiple museums. After the Depression, Brown went on to teach art in Philadelphia public schools for the next 30 years.
