Virgil Tibbs is a San Francisco police detective who is arguing with the police chief (Rod Steiger) about the cause of death of a recent victim. The captain calls him "boy", and "Virgil". Tibbs says, “Don’t call me Virgil” and explains that where he is from “They call me Mister Tibbs!"
