These cool-looking towers are situated along the banks of Mono Lake, which is east of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. What are these formations called?

Tufas are made of limestone and are created when hot springs meet up with the carbonates in lake water. This confluence causes these limestone towers to form. Tufas are not limited to Mono Lake, and have formed in many lakes in California and Nevada.
