The first version of Albert was a live gator who first appeared at UF football games in 1957 season. 13 years later, Albert became a costumed mascot, and was joined by his female companion, Alberta, 14 years later. They are a powerhouse mascot couple, with Albert once being named as the number 1 mascot in a ranking in Sports Illustrated.
