Both Dustin Hoffman and Liam Neeson were attached to the part of English teacher John Keating, which ultimately went to Robin Williams. Keating himself was a composite of two of screenwriter Tom Schulman's real life teachers: one from the Actors and Directors Lab and one from his Nashville prep school.
