Minnie Riperton studied dance, drama, and music at the Lincoln Center in Chicago. By her teenage years, she was singing with a girl group called the Gems. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976 and was one of the first celebrities to be publicly open about her diagnosis. Sadly, she passed away in 1979 at the age of 31.
