Mary Phelps Jacob (later known as Caresse Crosby) saved women from insufferable pain by inventing the first modern brassiere in 1913. The New York socialite was wearing a sheer evening gown for an event, and the corset in vogue at the time was visible around the neckline. To fix this wardrobe malfunction, Jacob designed a simple bra with pink ribbon and two silk handkerchiefs. Her design grew from there and the rest is much-less-painful history.
